What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths in the wall of the uterus.
They vary in size, shape, and location. There may be a single fibroid or several of them. The size of the fibroid varies between apple seed to as large as a grapefruit. The location of the fibroid may be inside the uterine cavity, outside of the uterus, within the wall of the uterus, or attached to the uterus by a stalk.
Fibroids can occur at any age but are most common in women between 40s to mid-50s. They are three times more common in African-American women than in white women.
What are the common symptoms of fibroids?
Fibroid symptoms depend on the fibroid’s size, shape, and location. Some fibroids remain symptomless and are diagnosed during a physical examination, while others cause symptoms such as:

How are fibroids diagnosed?

Can fibroids transform into a cancerous tumor?

Is it always necessary to treat fibroids?
Fibroids that don't cause any symptoms, are small, and occur in women who are near menopause don't require any treatment but still require monitoring.
