What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths in the wall of the uterus.

They vary in size, shape, and location. There may be a single fibroid or several of them. The size of the fibroid varies between apple seed to as large as a grapefruit. The location of the fibroid may be inside the uterine cavity, outside of the uterus, within the wall of the uterus, or attached to the uterus by a stalk.

Fibroids can occur at any age but are most common in women between 40s to mid-50s. They are three times more common in African-American women than in white women.

What are the common symptoms of fibroids?

Fibroid symptoms depend on the fibroid’s size, shape, and location. Some fibroids remain symptomless and are diagnosed during a physical examination, while others cause symptoms such as:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

  • A feeling of fullness and pain in lower abdomen

  • Frequent urination

  • Anemia

  • Infertility

How are fibroids diagnosed?

Dr. Patel might suspect you have fibroids based on your history, symptoms, and the results of a physical examination. He orders additional tests to confirm the diagnosis, such as lab work, ultrasound, MRI, hysteroscopy, and laparoscopy.

Can fibroids transform into a cancerous tumor?

Fibroids are almost always non-cancerous. In less than 0.1% of women with fibroids, a cancer may be detected but this cancer does not arise from already existing fibroids. Having fibroid also does not increase your chance of getting other types of cancer.

Is it always necessary to treat fibroids?

Fibroids that don't cause any symptoms, are small, and occur in women who are near menopause don't require any treatment but still require monitoring.

Symptomatic fibroids causing pain, discomfort, or heavy bleeding during menses should be treated. Your available treatment options depend upon the age of the patient, symptoms, size, and location of fibroid and future desire for children. However, Dr. Patel specializes in uterine fibroid embolization.
