Uterine Fibroid Embolization

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, less invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids. The procedure blocks the blood supply to the fibroids, which gradually shrinks them.

It's typically an outpatient procedure with minimal discomfort, and the patient can return to work within a weeks time.

How do I know whether UFE is right for me?

Dr. Patel can give you the best advice about the fibroid treatment option suitable for your case. He also collaborates with your OB/GYN to safely treat the fibroids.

UFE is suitable for you if you:

How is the procedure performed?

Dr. Patel performs the procedure while you're under sedation and local anesthesia.

Under X-ray guidance and through a 5 mm incision in the wrist, Dr. Patel places a thin tube in the blood vessel that supplies blood to the fibroid. He then injects tiny gel-like particles the size of sand in the vessel. The particles block the blood supply to the fibroid, causing it to shrink.

He repeats the procedure on the other side.

What care do I need to take after the procedure?

Patients are able to go home a few hours after the procedure. Dr. Patel also prescribes you pain and other medication to take as needed.

You can start moving around after 24 hours and can typically resume your routine work within a weeks time.

What are the advantages of UFE?

UAE has several advantages over other surgical or nonsurgical methods, including:

  • Decreased menstrual blood loss

  • Reduced pain and pressure

  • Preservation of uterus

  • No hospital stay in most cases

  • Faster recovery time

  • Minimum blood loss

What are the risks associated with UFE?

UAE is usually a safe procedure without any significant complications. But, there are some associated risks as with every medical procedure, including:

  • Pain and cramping

  • Allergic reactions

  • Vaginal discharge

  • Amenorrhea or decreased bleeding

  • Premature menopause

  • Injury to other arteries or uterus
